An interdisciplinary graphic fine artist, I generally work with photography and printmaking, as well as drawing. I use a lot of found imagery from old magazines, newspapers, packets and packaging of many kinds. This is the type of material that very often ends up being thrown away, except that I tend to save it so it can be used as source material. Once a fragment, photo or page has been selected, it is crumpled, folded, torn or otherwise manipulated. Then it is photographed. As a result, what was once designed with a limited lifespan, is repurposed as art.

In other work I use a phone camera in a much more spontaneous and intuitive manner, rather like using a notebook or sketch pad. This is a useful way to test images and their combinations. It is also a great way to engage with the world in a more relaxed and playful way, allowing the development of new visual vocabularies.

Brief Bio

1979  B.A (hons) Illustration.   Bower Ashton, Bristol (now UWE).
1994  M.A  Graphic Fine Art.   K.I.A.D, Canterbury (now UCA).

After graduation Paul Neale spent some years working as a designer and illustrator for a Japanese industrial company. In the early 1980s he moved to Portugal, living first in Aveiro and then in Porto. He soon became enamoured of the country's culture and history and got to know Portugal quite well. He established a dual career as an artist and EFL teacher, exhibiting regularly in national and international biennals, group shows and a number of solo shows.

Neale moved to Spain in the late 1990s and took up residence in Barcelona for a year or so, where he worked as a teacher, artist and writer. The city's vibrant cultural and artistic currents were lively and stimulating and provided many opportunities to meet other artists and visit shows, galleries and museums.

By the time of the new millennium Neale had returned to the U.K. He based himself in the university city of Cambridge where he continues to live and work.
Since the Covid 19 pandemic lockdown restrictions he has been contributing to 'zines and a variety of online initiatives and projects.

He is currently working on a series of prints and photographs and collaborates on a regular basis with St. Barnabas Press, Cambridge.

Paul Neale is based in Cambridge, U.K.  He is married with two children.
